A Tea Tradition in Minneapolis, Gently Evolving.
The Northern Lights Tea Company has been a part of the Minneapolis community since 2008, serving thoughtfully sourced loose leaf teas to locals and visitors alike. As we continue this journey, we’re slowly transitioning into a new name — Yutori — a word that speaks to the space and calm tea brings to everyday life. While the name may change, our commitment to quality, care, and connection remains the same.
From Skyway Roots to a New Horizon.
The story of The Northern Lights Tea Company began in the heart of downtown Minneapolis in 2008, nestled in the bustling skyway system. It started as a labor of love by Sandy, a local artist known for her gentle presence and creative spirit. What began as a small shop where she shared her love for both visual art and the delicate craft of tea quickly became a cherished sanctuary for many. Her walls held not only shelves of loose leaf blends but also glimpses of her artwork — a space where people came not just to sip, but to slow down.
Sandy’s deepening knowledge of tea soon began to shine just as brightly as her artistry. Through years of blending, sourcing, and sharing, she became known across the Twin Cities for her intuitive tea recommendations, warm conversations, and a talent for turning a cup of tea into a meaningful moment. Her expertise and presence transformed the shop into more than a business — it became a community staple for those seeking a pause from the daily rush.
Her husband, Roland, originally from Germany, quietly played a vital role behind the scenes. With a sharp mind for numbers and a love for precision, he helped manage the business side of the shop. A steady and supportive partner, Roland brought balance to the creative chaos, ensuring the business thrived without losing its soul.
After more than a decade of service and storytelling through tea, Sandy and Roland have stepped into a well-earned retirement. They now reside in Spain, where they spend their days surrounded by sun, sea, and slower rhythms — a fitting next chapter for two people who built their lives around intentional living.
As the story continues, the company is entering a new phase. While still operating under its original name, The Northern Lights Tea Company is gradually becoming Yutori — a name inspired by the Japanese concept of spaciousness, balance, and peace of mind. The heart of the company remains unchanged: offering thoughtfully curated teas to the Minneapolis community, always with the same warmth, care, and quiet purpose that Sandy and Roland infused into every cup.
